Hierarchical Composition

For this week we will explore creating a composition hierarchically or top down.    We will start with an intentional outline, beginning, middle and end at a bare minimum,  then fill in each of those sections with further hierarchical structures.   For example the section we will refer to as the beginning, will itself has a beginning, middle and end.

Further reading on hierarchical structures with exceptional literary references may be found here.   A philosophical reading about musical structures in 20th century music can be found here (or via other sources:  James Tenny: Meta+Hodos).

For this class we will focus on producing a piece with 4 sections, were each section has 3 -sub sections within it.   Each sub-section will be a sound, combination of sounds or sequence of sounds (depending on your level).

The sub-sections shall start and end with a related sound,  and each adjacent sub-section, shall be either related or intentionally un-related to the preceding sound.

You will be required to decide what sounds will be in each subsection before listening to the sounds played in sequence.    For each subsection, you will write down on paper which sound will play.  Please scan or take a picture of the piece of paper and email it to me as part of your submission.

When you have completed your composition.  You will render or export your composition as a single audio file that you will post to sound cloud.   Ableton Live allows you to post directly to sound cloud from the export dialog, which may save you a few steps (once your sound cloud account is established).

Once your sound is online, please submit the links via this lab form.
